Books from and about Wales
We have a large local interest section, including many specialist books on local towns and villages, industries and buildings, including some that we have published or printed ourselves.
We have just reprinted Llanidloes Town and Parish by E Ronald Morris, a book full of old photographs of Llanidloes from the 19th and early 20th century as well as pictures of old documents, together with a concise history of the area and captions. Copies available now in the bookshop, or get in touch if you would like us to post you a copy.
We stock all the Ordnance Survey Explorer and Landranger maps for Wales, as well as walking and cycling guides. We have a transport section with local railway books and DVDs.
We have many books on Welsh history, landscape, architecture, customs and legends. There are also books and dictionaries for those who are learning Welsh. In addition, you will find a good range of literature and poetry published in Wales, mostly in English and some in Welsh, as well as books by local authors.
We stock the Montgomeryshire Records of births, baptisms, marriages, burials, and memorial inscriptions for all the local parishes, published by the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society, and other publications relevant to Local and Family History Research.
We have a very large range of craft and textile books, including many books on quiltmaking, knitting and crochet, weaving, spinning, dyeing, embroidery, sewing and felting. These crafts are very close to our hearts and we take a specialist textile book stall to most of the craft events that Llanidloes is famous for at the Minerva Arts Centre, and to some farther afield, eg ‘Wonderwool’ festival at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells.
Llanidloes has a long history of textile production and wool trade, including flannel making and weaving. The second hand book barn was once a weaving workshop! Today, the Minerva Arts Centre is owned by the Quiltmaker’s Association and we have many textile events and exhibitions including World Textile Day at the Arts Centre and the month-long Wool and Willow exhibition every June. Please see our links page for further information.
